Principles of Design, Art and Visualisation (Visual Design)

goal:

Visual Design aims at presenting digital content to a human audience. After this course students should be able to create visual experiences for defined audiences and for specified goals (e.g. to convince the audience, to evoke certain emotions, to warn, to surprise and/or please esthetically, to convey “non-verbal” information). The course will support the development of a creative attitude, the awareness of creative processes, and the choice and application of tools and techniques (both computer supported and “traditional” like hand drawing and sketching)

content:

This course is directed at creating “digital content”. Products of visual design in the digital realm requires intimate knowledge of production tools for digital content, experience with the process of developing such content, and critical awareness of the aesthetic goals underlying the use and production of digital content. In addition, knowledge of digital formats is needed to be able to comply with existing production standards.

In this course, guest-lecturers working in the field of digital content production will be invited to present their work and discuss their design goals and the process of development. Based on these presentations, the student will be given a series of assignments through which they will gain experience with defining aesthetic goals, the use of digital content production tools the process of development, and digital content production standards.

Active participation of students is required, to enable a critical assessment in each step of the digital content production cycle. In the final evaluation, the students’ work will be subjected to judgment by experts in the field of digital content production.

Lecture 1.

Intro by the 3 teachers;

Registration for project tasks, e.g., a choice from

(1)  Lining a game environment,

(2)  Visualization of poems or theater,

(3)  Development of trademark and corporate identity;

Lecture 2-4

Visual design practitioners present their work and discuss their motivation

Project period 1

Project groups work on their assignment and weekly present their developments to the other groups

Lecture 5

Half way presentations and assessment

Visual design practitioners present their work and discuss their motivation

Project period 2

Project groups work on their assignment and weekly present their developments to the other groups

Final presentation of the product (implemented in a website) to the jury of practitioners
